This is an injury in which the tendons of the peroneal muscles are affected, causing pain on the outside of the ankle during movement. The patient may experience discomfort when palpating the tendons, inflammation, a sensation of heat, morning stiffness in the ankle, etc.
It is usually caused by repetitive use of the peroneal muscles during activities that involve dorsal flexion and pronation of the foot, such as running, jumping or walking on uneven ground. This overload can cause microthaumatisms in the tendons, which in turn trigger inflammation and pain.
Other factors that may contribute to the appearance of pain in this area may be inappropriate footwear, weakness or muscle imbalances, changes in the biomechanics of the foot and ankle, an intensity that is not tolerated, or returning to activity after a period of inactivity.
At Evolution Physiotherapy we treat these types of pathologies through the use of analgesic and anti-inflammatory techniques (Cryopush and/or diathermy), manual therapy of the affected muscles, percutaneous neuromodulation, osteopathic manipulations and therapeutic exercise whose purpose is to restore normal ankle functionality, stability and dynamics of the foot.
